Dari sekian banyak kerajinan tangan masyarakat Banjar, Kalimantan Selatan. Kerajinan sulam Air Guci atau Arguci adalah salah satunya.
Kerajinan berupa kemahiran menyulam atau melukis kain dengan menempelkan payet ini memang sudah dimiliki orang-orang Banjar sejak lama. Bukan itu saja, kerajinan ini juga berkaitan erat dengan sejarah perjalanan panjang eksistensi masyarakat Banjar.
Sama seperti keberadaan kain Sasirangan dan Sarigading, Air Guci ini kemunculannya juga tak terlepas dari jalannya kisah hikayat Banjar. Menurut kisah dalam budaya tutur masyarakat Banjar yang secara turun-temurun terus dijaga, konon arguci merupakan simbol kemewahan pembesar kesultanan Banjar dan para pagustian (bangsawan/keluarga kerajaan).
Pada kejayaan kesultanan Banjar keindahan Sulam Arguci (payet) ini telah menghias baju-baju kebesaran yang dipakai oleh raja-raja Banjar. Selain juga mempercantik dinding-dinding istana, bahkan sampai ranjang para sultan juga tidak luput dari sentuhan arguci dengan motif beragam yang umumnya mempunyai pakem yang melekat.
Sepertinya tradisi dan kebiasaan lingkungan istana Kesultanan Banjar yang selalu menjadikan arguci sebagai elemen penting dan utama untuk membangun estetika di berbagai kepentingan dan keperluan estetis kesultanan sejak ratusan tahun yang lalu dan inilah akar dari ciri khas dekorasi pelaminan, ragam hias pakaian adat dan juga hiasan tradisional khas Banjar yang hingga kini dipakai.
